Why Do We Still Have Homelessness in 2020?
I’m baffled in the year 2020, that we still have homelessness around the world. In fact, as I look at our major cities, I see homelessness growing in the coming years. We were removing a lot of the basic jobs and replacing these with automation. I don’t see our homeless problem getting better when basic jobs that people could do are going to disappear. This is a look at homelessness and why I feel that it’s going to become a major problem if we don’t address it very quickly.
I consider myself to be very lucky. I live in a condo with my wife, and we didn’t pay a whole lot for it. We still have a mortgage on this place, but we should be able to pay it off as it was not that much money. We did rent beforehand and our rent was actually quite low, but that was only because we got a good deal from our landlord. Today, in this small town where I live, we could simply not afford to rent due to the skyrocketing cost of it. It is upwards of $1,200 to $1,500 to rent even a single one-bedroom apartment. This is an idiotic amount of money for someone to have to spend on a simple rental. While you can get deals in some places, the cost of rent keeps going up.
My question to you is if rent keeps going up and wages don’t rise along with it, how are people going to be able to afford the rent? Most people rent because they can’t afford the cost of a home. The median cost of a home in the United States right now is around $200,000. This is on the lower end because most major cities’ cost of housing is astronomical. In Vancouver, Canada, where I used to live the cost of a home there is over $1,000,000. These costs don’t go down, they keep going up. While they may fluctuate slightly, they usually rise again. The average person in Vancouver cannot afford a home. The cost of homeownership is going to be out of reach for most people in the coming years.
This is why you see the trend of small tiny homes. You can get a tiny home for a lot less money when you compare it to buying a regular home. For people that have families, this is sometimes not practical because they needed more room to raise their family. Trying to buy a regular home is a giant headache due to the cost of it. If people can’t afford to rent, and they can’t afford to buy a home, where are they going to live? Young people today often have to get together with their friends to simply be able to afford a place that they can live. In the coming years, will young people today even be able to afford anything at all?
Get a Job Ya Bum!!
Oh yes, the ever-common saying for homeless people. Get a job, ya bum! I have news for you. A lot of people that are homeless actually have jobs. They’re forced to live on the street because they can’t afford to live anywhere else. Maybe people that live on the street don’t want to be there. They are there because they can’t afford anything else. There are people on the street living in their cars. People just want a decent quality of life. While there are a few people on the street that are nomads and hobos by choice, the vast majority of people on the street don’t want to be there. It’s not enough to say get a job. A lot of these people want jobs. Some of them can’t get jobs because they don’t have any identification. Companies don’t want to hire them because they are homeless. We have to stop seeing homelessness is just too lazy people. This really isn’t the case at all. These are people that are struggling greatly and need help.
- Over 1.6 billion worldwide have inadequate housing
- The US has over 500,000 homeless as of 2018
- The median cost of rent in the USA for a one-bedroom apartment — $1,216
- Average USA median income- -$31,099
- Median USA home cost is $200,000
- 38.1 million people classified as living in poverty in the USA (2018)
Some people that live on the streets are suffering from drug abuse and mental health issues. They are not able to help themselves because they are addicted to drugs, or they have certain mental health issues. Instead of trying to help them, we throw them away like yesterday’s garbage. If you have never been addicted to a substance, you don’t understand what addiction actually is. When you are addicted to something, it can be hell on earth. You want to stop the addiction, but you can’t stop. The substance has control over you.
We have to stop seeing these people as drug addicts and see them as human beings. We have to give them the hell so that they can get off the street. If no one is giving help, they will just spiral down further into the darkness of addiction. When people have no hope, they tend to seek comfort in things they shouldn’t be doing, such as drugs or alcoholism. When people get desperate, they do desperate things such as break the law or get involved with crime. If you were starving on the street, you would probably be doing some of these things yourself. Starvation has a way of making you do bad things.
We go about our day-to-day lives, worried about our own money and our own activities. We forget that these people are human beings too. They need help, and they need a way off of the street. If we do not help our homeless people, this problem is going to get worse. We cannot keep going in this way as a society. If the cost of things keeps going up and there is no way to pay the bills, homelessness is going to skyrocket.
It is greed and the never-ending lust for profit that is contributing to our homeless problem. We have politicians that say they will solve the homeless problem, but they never do. In reality, profit is more important than actual people. To hell with the people, we want the money. If homelessness and poverty don’t piss you off, there’s really something wrong with you as a human being. I’ve been on this planet for almost 50 years now, and nothing has changed.
In fact, I see things getting worse. Go look at San Francisco. In fact, if you want to take a trip to San Francisco, there’s an interactive poo map that you can view, which will help you avoid the shit on the street. This is because there are so many people living on the street and they have no place to go to the bathroom. There are drug addicts, and people are losing hope. They are full of despair and wretchedness, but let’s just sweep the problem under the rug. Go turn on the football game, have a beer, and forget that they are human beings. Welcome to 2020. I hope you have a wonderful year.
