Is COVID-19 a Wake-Up Call from Our Planet?

As COVID-19 makes its way around the world, I am noticing some things about humanity that leave me shaking my head in disbelief. This virus shows us where we are as a species. We have not learned anything from the past, and in my view, we are going backward.

In cities and towns all over this world, people are starting to panic. They’re starting to hoard goods like toilet paper, water, and food. We are paralyzed by our own fear, and mass hysteria is starting to take place in some areas. Instead of working together for a common goal, which is defeating this virus, we are spiraling downwards. I don’t know what the next few weeks or months will bring, but I don’t have much confidence that society as a whole can come together like we should to defeat this virus.

We Came Together Before

I have to admire our grandfathers and grandmothers who work together to defeat Nazi Germany and the Imperial Japanese in World War II. We had rationing and the sharing of goods. Nobody took more than they should, and we sacrificed a lot by turning these goods over so that they could be used in the war effort.

It was this sacrifice by everyday individuals that helped win the war. If people started hoarding back, then the war probably wouldn’t have been won. We worked together as a society for the common…
